One majestic slender head slightly cocked
toward the sky suddenly ruffles
as a low howl emerges from
deep within his heart. Searching
for friends, searching for food,
looking for understanding, he
knows a soulful song for each,
and cries them out. His voice
lifts high, carried upon eagle’s
wings to the tops of the
mountains and back again. He
listens to his echo with a slightly
cocked ear, straining to hear
something other than himself.
A longer, deeper howl is released,
crying out his loneliness. He
rises and turns back into the
woods as his echo returns
behind him. With a sudden jerk,
he turns back, hearing a
slight variance in his echo.
A friend, perhaps. He resumes
his vigil at the top of the hill
and again raises his majestic
slender head to the skies. ~ Juli Freda
