It all began with a kind message from a listener who had spent many hours working with myNoise playing in the background. Chris Thomson-Drew, also known as Ion Stream, reached out to share how much the site helped him stay focused in his daily work as an IT engineer. He also came with a generous offer: to contribute to the project as a composer of ambient electronic music.
I am fan of ambient electronic and loved the quality of the tracks he submitted straight away. It’s no surprise, Chris holds a master’s degree in video game music and sound production, and he was already very familiar with the myNoise audio engine. When I received his stems, everything fell into place easily. The layers were perfectly aligned, tuned in C#, and flowed steadily at 60 BPM. Each sound gently moved with the others, creating a slow and peaceful drift. My contribution was to add small details that slowly reveal themselves during longer sessions: the kind of elements that reward a patient ear. Did you know, on average, listeners spend about an hour on a single myNoise generator page? How long will you stay with this one? ;)
As I worked on this page, listening for hours, the music started to tell a story to me. And here it is.
Somewhere in the universe, on a planet made of sands, The Architect set down a monolith-like object. As civilizations emerged and discovered it, they questioned its purpose and origin. Could it be a beacon, marking a specific point in space in the Universe; or time, as when it eclipses bright celestial objects passing in the sky? It was a beacon, but not in the way they believed. It didn’t measure space. It didn’t mark time. Instead, it measured something deeper. What do you feel when faced with the unexplainable? That was the question the artefact asked. And the intricate feelings it raised, was the exact nature of the signal sent back to The Architect.
